Whitefield

Whitefield is a small town with a population of 2294. Like most Maine towns it is governed by an elected Board of Selectmen, and has a town meeting form of government. Public education is offered through the eighth grade, with high school available on the tuition system in the larger surrounding towns and cities.

The east and west branches of the Sheepscott River meet in Whitefield, offering fresh water fishing, and when the Spring snow melt run-off is taking place, excellent whitewater canoeing and kayaking. The population mix includes many professional people who have chosen to live in Whitefield and work in other localities. The town has two convenience stores and various other small retail businesses. In addition to dairy farms, there are two makers of cheese, and even a resident sculptor of national prominence.

The tax rate in Whitefield is $18.5 per thousand dollars of valuation, and property is assessed at 85% of valuation. The town office is open Monday 7-12 and 4-9, Tuesday 7-3, Wednesday 7-12, and Friday 7-3.  It is located at 36 Townhouse Road behind the historical society.
