Jefferson

Jefferson is a small (population 2392) town located at the head of Damariscotta Lake in Lincoln County. It is within easy commuting distance to Augusta, Maine's capital city, and convenient to mid-coastal towns along U.S. Route 1.

The public schools system goes from kindergarten through eighth grade, with high school education available with town-paid tuition at various high schools in nearby towns. Jefferson is a part of School Union 132. There is no large industry in Jefferson, but there is a healthy mix of farmers, woods workers, retired people, commuters to occupations in Augusta and surrounding towns, and various retail positions. In the summer there are vacationers who come to enjoy the pleasures of Damariscotta Lake and its adjacent rural areas.

The tax rate in Jefferson is $13 per thousand for 2005. The town office is open Monday 4-8, Tuesday 8-4, Wednesday 8-6, and Friday 8-4 with the office being closed for lunch during the noon hour.  The town office is located at 58 Washington Road next to the Jefferson Village School.  Rubbish is brought to the transfer station in Nobleboro.
