AREA INFORMATION:

ALNA

Originally, Alna (pronounced All - nah) was part of an area called Sheepscott Farms, which also included parts of what is now Newcastle, Wiscasset and Dresden. When it was incorporated in 1794, it was called New Milford, but in 1811 New Milford was deemed too "industrial" and the name was changed to Alna, which reflects the Latin name for alders, which grow so abundantly here.

The Sheepscott River forms the major portion of the eastern boundary of the town, providing boating, fishing and swimming, plus views of unsurpassable serenity. Students attend school in Wiscasset in grades K through 8, and then are permitted a choice of several high schools under the State's tuition system. Lawyers, surveyors, cabinet makers and antique dealers have home offices or businesses in the town, but basically it is a bedroom community. Many folks raise a few farm animals and do a little vegetable gardening as a hobby and as a way to supplement their incomes. The Alna store and coffee shop is a social gathering place where groceries, gossip and information are available.

Landmarks in Alna include: the Old Meeting house, built in 1789, the old one room school built in the early 1800's and used until fairly recently; the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum; and in the late Spring, the Barth lily gardens. Not to be missed, also, is the Village of Head Tide, where the Sheepscott River ceases to be tidal. This village has many lovely 18th century houses and some of the old mill buildings which utilized the Sheepscott River for water power.

The tax rate in Alna is $14.50 per thousand. The town office is located at 1568 Alna Road (Route 218).  The town office is open Monday 10-6, Tuesday 10-6, Wednesday 12-5, Thursday 11-8, and Friday 10-6.
